Your private meeting room
A meeting room of your own for office hours, interviews, and conversations that aren't a seminar, plus how to invite people and post office hours.
Every member of the School has a private meeting room: a browser video room of your own, separate from the rooms used for seminars and events. Use it for office hours, application interviews, committee conversations, and anything else that isn’t a class. Find it under My LSP → Meeting room, in the menu behind your photo.
The room is for the work of the School. Please don’t use it for clinical work with analysands.
The one rule worth knowing
Nobody can be in your room unless you are. That holds for everyone, whoever they are and however they were invited. If someone opens your link before you’ve arrived, they see a page saying the meeting hasn’t started, and it lets them in as soon as you’re there.
So a link that gets forwarded or lands in the wrong inbox can’t put a stranger in an empty room of yours. It also means you should open the room at the time you agreed, or your visitor will be left waiting on the doorstep.
Opening your room
Go to My LSP → Meeting room and press Open my room. The room is always the same one, so the link never changes and you can reuse it.
Inviting people
On the same tab, under Who can join:
- LSP members—tick them in the list. Type in the box above it to filter by name. They’ll get a notification with a link, and they sign in as themselves.
- Anyone else—type them in the box below, one per line. A name on its own
is enough. You can also write
jane@example.com, orJane Doe <jane@example.com>.
If you give an email address, we’ll send them the link. If you leave it out, you get a link to copy and send yourself, using the Copy button beside it. Either way they don’t need an account, and they don’t need to sign in.
You can add a short note that your guest sees on the way in, for example “Our interview, Thursday at 2”.
An invitation to someone with an account lasts until you Revoke it. A guest link lasts a month, since it’s a secret sitting in someone’s inbox.
Letting people in one at a time
By default, anyone you’ve invited walks straight in once you’re in the room. Tick Let people in one at a time in the settings below and they’ll instead wait on a doorstep screen until you admit them, which you do from inside the call. Useful during office hours, when you’d rather finish one conversation before the next begins.
Recording
Recording is off by default in your room, and no one but you can turn it on. If you switch it on in the settings, a Record button appears in the call; nothing is recorded until you press it, and everyone sees the recording indicator while it runs.
A recording made in your room is yours alone. Nobody else can watch it, not even staff. To share one, download it and send it on.
Office hours
If you teach a seminar or convene a reading group, you can tell members when they can find you. In the settings, choose one of three:
- Not shown—nothing appears anywhere. This is the default.
- Posted hours—your note is shown, and people can come in while you’re in the room: any LSP member, and anyone registered for a seminar or reading group you lead, whether or not they’re a member.
- By appointment only—your note is shown, but nobody can join uninvited. You invite them when you’ve agreed a time.
Then write a line saying when, or how to arrange it. It’s free text, so “Thursdays 3-4pm Pacific” and “alternate Tuesdays after seminar, or write to me” both work.
Your hours appear on the Workspace of each seminar or reading group you lead, so your students see them, and on your directory page, where they’re visible to members only. They’re never shown publicly.
You don’t need to invite your class. Posted hours read your roster directly, so someone who registers late is let in and someone who withdraws isn’t, with nothing for you to keep in step.
Posted hours don’t commit you to anything: the room still opens only when you open it, and you can change or withdraw them at any time.
Who can have one
Meeting rooms are for members of the School. Auditors, students, applicants, and anyone with a free account don’t get a room of their own, but they can be invited into yours, and they can come to your office hours if they’re registered for something you lead.
If something goes wrong
Test your camera and microphone beforehand at Test your video & audio. If a guest tells you the page says you haven’t started the meeting yet, check that you’re actually in the room; it can take a few seconds to notice you’ve arrived.
